Chapter 27: Defector

The entire day was spent showing the dragons around some of the human technology, while telling them about how my life before the war went. I hoped that at least it would make me seem less distant anyway.

Being a dragon and all really wasn't my thing. I still fumbled around with the claws and found the extra appendages extra annoying. But then again, I couldn't do much about it.

I still missed being human... And not to mention a good drink...

Eventually, they returned to the house in the evening, while I spoke with Victor. We agreed to use the vehicle sirens as an alarm in the event of an attack.

After that, we went to check up on the slightly neglected prisoner, Fenek in tow.

Imperitus was a heap of yellow scales in his cage, facing away from the entrance. He only looked over when I tapped the top.

The dragon's eyes widened at my appearance. "Are you here to help?"

I gave him a pointed look and glanced at the guards. "Obviously not."

I received a disgusted look. "Then you are another of that human's pets. Begone! I have nothing to say to you!"

I drew my pistol. "I happen not to be a pet. I happen to be that human you're talking about, believe it or not, kid. I'm just here to remind you that good behaviour can have you let out of the cage. That is all."

The dragon evidently didn't believe me, and curled up weakly with a short.

Victor scoffed. "What an ass."

I shrugged. "Understatement, bro. Maybe I really should put a bullet in his head and save everyone from his attitude."

Victor shrugged. "Doesn't sound like you. We'll find a way eventually."

I nodded and we went off...

... And the siren started blaring.

Victor and I glanced at each other. I drew the pistol that I had just holstered. "Seriously?"

A bunch of armed guards scrambled past.

Victor nodded as he cocked his rifle and adjusted the sling. "Yup. Seriously."

We subsequently both ran to the main gate. A guard reported that a lone dragon had been seen approaching. A black dragon with a yellow underside. Very weird colouration if you asked me...

Soon enough, the creature sailed in over the walls. The guards raised their rifles. I raised my hand and told them to wait.

Something was not right.

If the dragon was out to attack, it would have charged in, rather than quietly moving like that. I broke from the group and followed, a worried Fenek close behind.

The dragon landed softly in the square, evidently trying to cause as little damage as possible.

More armed men approached. I told them to hold first as I approached the dragon, pausing to cock my pistol first.

Fenek barged in on my thoughts.  <Not too close. I don't want a repeat of the last time.>

I brushed him off. <This is no firefight. Keep your scales on.>

I looked up at the dragon, who seemed to be looking around. He made no move and showed no hostile intent. However, since he had seen the town up close, there was no way I was going to let him go off after looking around. In the background, one of the rovers careened down the street, with the windows wound down and the driver shouting out telling the general public to stay inside and remain calm... At least the piercing siren had been shut off.

I leaned on a convenient cart, holding the creature's gaze while making it obvious that I was armed. "State your business."

The dragon stuck his head in my face and looked me over, even pausing to sniff. "So it is true."

I jabbed his snout with my gun and scowled. "You'd best explain yourself before my men get bored and decide to shoot."

The dragon glanced around, at the buildings, then at the armed men. He dipped his head.

Fenek added, <He's broken his connection with the others...>

The dragon said nothing. I jabbed his snout with the pistol again. "Well?"

He looked up and looked me in the eye. "I surrender and join your cause."

There was a resounding gasp from the crowd. I blinked. "You're joking. Right?"

He snorted. "I do not jest. The council does not cater to the interest of common folk like me. Besides, I study the physical sciences, which have been outlawed. There is nowhere else I can go."

I raised what would have been my eyebrow. "Physical sciences? Common folk?"

The dragon snorted and nodded, while sitting on his haunches. "The humans call it physics, and chemistry I believe. And yes, common folk. We're called civilians by the humans,  I believe. I am no soldier."

Fenek somehow appeared next to me. "He speaks the truth."

I nodded and motioned for the men to stand down. The crowd started to disperse.

"Dragon, what's your name, and how did you know of this place?” I added, decocking and holstering my pistol.

"Your reputation is very well known now. We all know of the human resistance, led by a human turned dragon. My name is Drae'kos." He replied, looking around. "Perhaps I can help your cause? I have figured out how to build engines,  how to harness the power of lightning! It is sure to help!"

I blinked, then smirked. I beckoned Victor over, then told Drae'kos to wait. Fenek seemed confused but followed as Victor and I went off to the car park. Victor himself paused to get a trio of men to keep an eye on the dragon while we were gone.

Once we were out of earshot, I couldn't take it anymore and burst out laughing. Victor followed soon after as he started one of the foresters while I chambered into one of the trucks. "Well, Victor, let's give him a good long look, shall we, since he evidently didn't get eyes on the rover just now. "

Victor nodded as he drove off first. A moment later, there was a loud gasp from Drae'kos who had been waiting in the square. Fenek rolled his eyes and I giggled before starting the truck engine with the usual rumble and drove to the square.

Drae'kos' eyes were bigger than my windows by the time I shut the engine off and exited the vehicle. I laughed. "Not what you expected, huh."

He nodded and sniffed the truck, before taking a bipedal form and poking around the exterior. I smirked. "Never seen a truck before?"

Drae'kos nodded again. I shrugged. "You'll be under watch for a while just as a precaution. Welcome to Singapore. Report to me when you're ready to discuss a job. Feel free to walk around till then. Try not to break anything."

Drae’kos seemed slightly confused, but nodded all the same. He didn’t seem to be very interested in what I said, however, and instead occupied himself by looking over the truck, while Victor drove the Everest back to the car park.

I clambered into the cab with Fenek in tow. Drae’kos noticed this, and stuck his head in just before I shut the door. “May I join you two?”

I shrugged. “Why not. Get in, then.”

Once he was in, and after Fenek showed him how to use the seat belt, I got him to shut the door before starting the engines, showing him the different parts as I went along, before disengaging the brakes and driving off too.

Victor was already waiting at the car park when I parked. Once I got down, he came over, remarking, “You’re getting popular with the lizards, huh.”

I shrugged, while telling Fenek to show Drae’kos to the house. There was at least one sofa left anyway, while returning a remark, “I noticed. Must be this mane. It’s too damn fabulous.”

Victor smirked, then replied, serious. “Yeah, yeah. But, you do get my point, right?”

I nodded. “And housing along with public opinion are going to be a bitch. I know.”

Victor nodded, “Not to mention those troublemakers from the last time. You remember those idiots, right?”

I raised an eyeridge. “Yeah. Won’t forget them for a while. What happened this time?”

“They’re gone.” Came the reply. “They tried to break into the weapons room too, but failed. After that they just left the town. The leader left a note saying that they wouldn’t take orders from a dragon, even if you used to be human.”

I sighed. “I didn’t exactly ask for this shit, you know. Running this whole joint is hard enough. Now, I have to deal with being something that I am not. It’s a bloody pain. On top of that, my plans haven’t exactly been running nicely either. Fuel is a problem, power is a problem, and training is too damned slow. At this rate, they’ll keep chewing away at us till we’re all gone. Plus, I have no clue where to go from here. I never thought we would have gotten this far, honestly.”

Victor nodded. “Yeah, that. We need to discuss that. Though they did find some lesson plans among the random stuff. They do help a bit, and we’re slowly drawing up the rest. We’ll handle the training. The town is the mayor’s problem. You just relax and handle the dragons. We’ll be fine.”

I nodded, sighing. “You know what’s the worst part?”

“What?” I got the feeling that Victor already knew what I was going to say.

“I can’t even get a bloody drink now. Physiology doesn’t allow it. I’ll relax. At most, I’ll handle defence and maybe some small projects to bring this town up a few technology levels.” I replied with a shrug, before turning to go, “Let me know when the meeting is.

Victor nodded as he went off to inform the others. We did have some walkie talkies, but the batteries were mostly dead, and we didn’t want to spin up the generators to charge them just yet.

Bits by bits the world and society of the dragons are coming together.

So a council of old dragons are ruling with absolute power over the rest of their people, yet only really caring about their warrior elite / aristocracy while leaving the rest of society in the dark of their own people's past and the rest of the world. Sounds nearly a bit like North Korea to me.
