Chapter 34: Settling In

Of course, the meeting was done over a nice brunch. I half wanted to sneak alcohol again, but decided against it, especially since I noticed that Fenek was glaring at me.

Once we got down to business, the big issues were tabled and added to the agenda for later. What had to be done first was to do an after action review of the actual fight, especially since our defences had been breached with relative ease.

That was when I brought up the issue of the dragons with the special abilities. First, the mage, then now the scale colour changing fellow...the one the dragons called a skinwalker. I basically outlined how the former could be used against us as either a commando or as a pushing force against the city walls, while the latter would be useful in subversion and espionage. However, the main briefing was done by Agenor who took over once I went over the short introduction.

Agenor didn't quite go in depth about the balance thing as I had hoped, but he did mention that having one species holding dominance over another is an imbalance. It more or less stopped there, however.

About the Battle Mages, Agenor began by giving a simple tactic to deal with them; keep throwing things at them till they tire out. Once they tire, the spells would dissipate, and we would actually be able to do damage. However, the issue was that they had obscene levels of endurance, and the sheer amount of firepower needed to tire them out was ridiculous. Another way would be to get another mage to battle them, or to subdue them mentally, but those options were not open to us at the moment.

Skinwalkers, on the other hand, we're a different kettle of fish. Yes, my pistol shots had caused the imposter to be revealed. However, I couldn't be going round and shooting at the dragons on a regular basis...that would be plain stupid. They were supposedly able to imitate any dragon's appearance with ease, and to a large extent, their personality.

The only way to quietly sniff out an impostor was to get the help of another skinwalker... However, we had no clue where to find them, and all Agenor could give us was a shrug. Apparently, they would usually just live their lives out as themselves, unless there was a need for their powers. Most of the time, they would only be found out when it is too late...

Agenor did stress, however, that hopefully the balance belief thing would attract some of them to our side...

After that, we paused to discuss, though there wasn't much to argue about, since everyone had seen the mage, and enough had seen my little skirmish on the rooftop not to dispute my claims.

We did, however, decide to call the skinwalkers chameleons.

Eventually, the discussion turned to more mundane things like storage solutions, housing, and the possible formation of a dragon branch, which I would head more or less independently. It didn't help that word out on the street was that most of the dragons would only listen to me.

There was however, no shortage of new fighters since the battle, as people had been lining up to join the fight. The issue was experience. Most of the experienced men were either in the room already or were already committed as trainers. I was the only one that didn't have a specialised role as an instructor, as I was told to handle all the training for the dragon side, and was given some instructors to parcel out on my own.

Eventually, the civilian government was called in as well to discuss expansion plans, while the dragons and I went off.

The house adjacent to mine had been rebuilt, and given over to the dragon warriors, those that had come in from the village, to use as their bunks. They did, however, see it fit to knock down the wall between my house and theirs, then put in a door. I added in yellow paint 'OC' on the door itself, since I was pretty much the officer commanding anyway. The joke took a while to be explained.
and here's the next chapter, after a looooong period of silence, which I must apologise for. Bleh >.=.<

Anyways, it's a short one, so enjoy!

Fenek and I wandered around for a while, even meeting up with the real Atheros on the way . it turned out that he had been with Agenor the entire time. I made sure to check that they were all tagged.
We eventually ended up in the square, where more people wandered, their eyes hollow.
I remembered that look. It was the look of someone who had gone through their first battle, and seen everything. It would pass.
People were sitting against the houses and such, well, against what was left anyway. Scattered around were bits of dragon, while the tanks themselves were covered in blood. A good number of the houses were covered in the stuff too...
As I felt the dragon adrenalin in my system begin to fizzle out, I was hit in the face with a world of aches, pains, and above all, fatigue. I was quite sure that my impact on the wall had done something to my back and tail too...
The dragons that had been under me stayed off to one corner, having been give

Eventually, I settled down to read a book, wanting some quiet time after all the excitement of the previous few days.
However, that was not to be, as one of the guards turned up on my doorstep the moment I flicked to the page where I had stopped at ages ago.
The man wasted no time with knocking the door, and came straight in. "Boss, we need you at the South gate now! A group of dragons just literally materialised in front and are asking for you by name! They don't seem to be looking for trouble, but some of them are wearing armour and such. Do you want an escorts?"
I glanced round to see Fenek fast asleep. I shrurged. "Nah. I'll live." With that, I put on my cap, which seemed to have dried, grabbed my pistol and went along with the man, "Eh, but get some guns pointed at them in case."
As the both of us rushed out, I received my reply. "They're covered. You sure you don't want someone to cover your back?"
I grunted and beckoned Agenor along. The sil
